There’s so much negative press about some of the nutritional advice out at the moment. So the main ones we’ve got at the moment are Paleo, Low Carb High Fat (LCHF), Ketogenic, Sugar Free and Low FODMAP. There are probably others but they overlap a bit. When you look closely at what these diets are promoting, you’ll see that they all say to reduce or remove processed food and especially sugars. Surely everyone can agree with them on that! I don’t do the label thing and prefer to simply promote eating a variety of real food and not too much of any one thing…the stuff that’s grown without chemicals that is. It doesn’t matter which one you follow, they all have real life stories of people that have taken on these lifestyles and have had an improvement in health. Just removing the processed food would create a large part of that improvement.
So what’s the big deal in following something that makes you feel better? Well the “health experts” say they’re missing vital nutrients by not eating bread, dairy or whatever else you take out. But I disagree. If you eat enough fruit and vegetables you can get all the nutrients and fibre you need and we all know to make sure you get a variety of them as well. I get annoyed with the whole media circus surrounding it and even more annoyed with the “authorities” on health saying it’s dangerous to recommend the removal of some food groups. The lactose intolerant and Coeliac’s have been doing it for years and living as well as can be. I haven’t seen the experts jumping up and down about their nutrient intake, nor suggesting they increase their fruit and veggie’s, there’s no money in that!
Everybody has different goals when they change their diet, and what works for one, might not work for another. Your emotional state also affects the process of change. Some people do well with a strict regime and others need to move more gently. So find something that suits you and get help if you need it. Just have a crack!
